What should you be aware of when installing solar panels on a flat roof?

Installing solar panels on a flat roof is relatively easy; after all, working on a flat roof surface is a lot safer and more comfortable than on a pitched roof. That said, there are some important points to bear in mind when installing solar panels on a flat roof.

• When you place solar panels on a flat roof at an angle, they cast a shadow. This means that the panels cannot be positioned too close to each other, as otherwise they’ll be in each other’s shadow. A flat roof therefore requires a larger roof area than for the same number of solar panels on a pitched roof.
• Unfortunately, not all flat roofs are perfectly oriented to the south.. In order to achieve the highest possible yield, solar panels on flat roofs should be positioned diagonally. This is another reason why a larger roof area is required than for the same number of panels on a pitched roof.
